About

The University of Burgos (Universidad de Burgos) is a public institution of higher education located in the city of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castile and Leon in northern Spain. It was established in 1994, when the faculties and schools then operating in the province were separated from the University of Valladolid to form an independent institution. During its early years the new university was overseen by a management committee before its own governing bodies were fully constituted, with Jose Maria Leal Villalba serving as its founding rector. The university takes as its motto the Latin phrase "In Itinere Veritas."

As a comprehensive public university, it enrolls roughly 10,000 students and offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programmes, over 20 doctoral programmes, and a range of official master's degrees and other graduate courses. Teaching and research are organised across several faculties and schools spread among campuses in Burgos, including the San Amaro and Rio Vena areas, with additional provision at Miranda de Ebro. Fields of study cover the sciences, engineering, health sciences, humanities, law, economics and business, and education. The institution is supported by around 700 academic staff alongside some 300 administrative and service personnel.

The University of Burgos maintains an active research profile, with output concentrated in areas such as chemistry, physics, environmental science, and computer science. It participates in international mobility and cooperation schemes, including the Erasmus programme, and has established exchange agreements with universities across several continents. Its publication and citation record place it among the mid-ranked Spanish universities in independent bibliometric assessments. Situated in a historic mid-sized city, the university contributes to the educational, cultural, and economic life of Burgos and its surrounding region while pursuing partnerships that connect its students and researchers with wider academic networks in Europe and beyond.
