About

The University of La Laguna (Universidad de La Laguna, ULL) is a public research university located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands. It is the oldest university in the archipelago and one of the two public universities serving the Canaries. Its origins are traced to a centre of higher studies established by the Augustinian order in 1701, while a literary university for the islands was created by royal decree under Charles IV in 1792. The modern institution dates its founding to 1927, when it was constituted as an independent university district, and it was subsequently reorganized under Canarian legislation in 1989.

The university is spread across several campuses in and around La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, including the Central, Anchieta, Guajara, Campus del Sur, Ofra and Santa Cruz sites. It offers a broad academic portfolio spanning the sciences, engineering and technology, health sciences, humanities, social and legal sciences, and the arts, organized through numerous faculties and schools. The ULL has long served as the principal centre of higher education and research for the western Canary Islands, hosting a community of more than 25,000 students, teaching staff and administrative personnel. Around 23,000 students were enrolled across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes according to figures reported for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Research at the university covers a wide range of disciplines, with notable activity in fields such as astrophysics, physics, chemistry and computer science, supported by the region's role as a hub for astronomical observation. The institution maintains an extensive record of academic publications and citations and features in international university assessments. Beyond teaching and research, the ULL plays a significant cultural and economic role in Tenerife, and its historic setting in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage city, reinforces its long-standing connection to the island's civic and intellectual life.
