About

The University of Göttingen, formally the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, is a public research university in the city of Göttingen in the German state of Lower Saxony. Established in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, and opened to students shortly afterwards, it ranks among the oldest and most prestigious universities in Germany.

From its earliest decades Göttingen built a strong reputation in the sciences and mathematics, and over the centuries it has been closely associated with an exceptional number of Nobel laureates as well as landmark figures in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Today it remains a comprehensive institution, teaching across the natural sciences, the humanities, law, economics, medicine, and the social sciences, and it belongs to the network of leading German research universities.

The university enrols roughly 28,000 students and draws a substantial international community to a classic university town where academic life shapes the character of the city. Its faculties, research centres, and one of Germany's historic university libraries support a broad culture of research and graduate study, reinforced by close ties to nearby Max Planck institutes and other research organisations.

On Stuudy, the University of Göttingen lists 31 programmes, spanning bachelor's and master's degrees across several fields of study. Prospective students can explore these offerings alongside details on the university, the city of Göttingen, and what studying in Germany involves, helping international applicants weigh Göttingen as a destination for higher education.
