Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, commonly known as LMU Munich, is a public research university based in Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria in southern Germany. Its history reaches back to 1472, when it was founded as the University of Ingolstadt by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. This makes it one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world and, according to Wikipedia, the sixth-oldest still operating continuously in Germany. The institution was later relocated to Landshut before finally moving to Munich in 1826 under King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria, whose name it carries alongside that of its original founder.
Today LMU Munich is one of the country's largest and most respected centres of higher education, welcoming a student body of roughly 58,000 and supported by an academic staff of around 14,000. Its faculties span a comprehensive range of fields, including the natural sciences, medicine, law, economics, business, the humanities, social sciences and theology, reflecting the broad tradition of a classical European research university. The main university buildings are located in the Maxvorstadt district, close to the centre of Munich and near the English Garden, placing students at the heart of one of Germany's most vibrant cities.
LMU maintains an active research profile and numerous international partnerships across Europe and beyond, drawing students and scholars from around the world.
