The University of Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam, UvA) is a public research university in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is the largest university in the country by enrollment, teaching roughly 41,000 students as of 2023 and employing several thousand academic and support staff. The institution traces its roots to 1632, when the city founded the Athenaeum Illustre to provide advanced instruction in the humanities and sciences. That forerunner was granted full university status in 1877, formally becoming the University of Amsterdam.

Today the university is organised into seven faculties: Humanities; Social and Behavioural Sciences; Economics and Business; Science; Law; Medicine; and Dentistry. Its activities are spread across several sites in the city rather than one enclosed campus. The historic city centre houses the humanities and central administration, while the Roeterseiland Campus concentrates the social sciences, economics, business and law. The natural sciences are based at Amsterdam Science Park, a major hub for research in physics, computer science and the life sciences, and medical and dental teaching are delivered through the Academic Medical Center and the joint dental school ACTA.

As a broad, research-intensive institution, the UvA maintains strong international ties and is a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). Its scholarly heritage includes several Nobel laureates connected to the university, among them the chemist Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff, the physicists Johannes Diderik van der Waals, Pieter Zeeman and Frits Zernike, the physiologist Christiaan Eijkman, and the jurist Tobias Asser. The UvA remains one of the most prominent centres of teaching and research in the Netherlands, offering a broad range of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, many of them taught in English.
