The University of Groningen (UG; Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) is a public research university in the city of Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. Founded in 1614, it is the second-oldest university in the country after Leiden, and it has grown into one of the largest and most research-intensive institutions in the Dutch higher-education system.

Today the university enrols roughly 33,000 students, including around 8,250 from outside the Netherlands, giving it a strongly international character. Teaching and research are organised across eleven faculties, together with a range of graduate schools and research institutes, offering more than 175 degree programmes. Most activity is based in Groningen itself, while one faculty, Campus Fryslân, operates in the nearby city of Leeuwarden. The university also accounts for a significant share of the doctorates awarded in the Netherlands, conferring 635 PhDs in 2023.

Groningen is known for strength across the sciences and social sciences, with particular distinction in fields such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and the behavioural sciences. Its research standing is reflected in affiliations with four Nobel Prize laureates and several recipients of the Dutch Spinoza Prize. The university belongs to international academic networks including the Coimbra Group and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. Among its many notable alumni are Wim Duisenberg, the first president of the European Central Bank, and Dirk Stikker, a former Secretary General of NATO. Combining a four-century history with a broad, internationally oriented academic profile, the University of Groningen is one of the established comprehensive research universities in the Netherlands.
